Put 4K on the large living-room television and leave everything else on HD. On a phone, a tablet or a bedroom set, HD looks materially identical and uses roughly a quarter of the data, which is the difference between three screens running comfortably and three screens competing. A 4K set is only one link in the chain. The HDMI port you are using has to be 2.0 or better, and whatever feeds it must decode 4K itself. Plenty of households discover the bottleneck is an older Fire TV Stick that quietly outputs 1080p no matter what the television is capable of.

On a screen below about 55 inches, at normal viewing distance, most people cannot reliably distinguish good HD from 4K. On a phone or a tablet the difference is essentially theoretical.
